Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Itaconic Acid from the Aqueous Phase Using Natural and Chemical Solvents

Itaconic acid, also known as methylene succinic is a colorless, crystalline substance that found in nature. Due to its two functional carboxylic acid forms and - unsaturated bond, it can be used variety of sectors (plastics, super-absorbents, biopolymers, anti-scaling agents, etc.). produced via thermally decarboxylating citric catalysing the condensation derivatives with formaldehyde, aconitic fermentation utilizing Aspergillus terreus other microbes. It quite expensive harmful extract itaconic from broth. In present study, Iso-butanol, iso-octanol, groundnut, soybean, mustard, rice bran oil were incorporated solvents for separating their solutions distilled water. Liquid-liquid extraction experiments conducted over range 0.08-0.533 mol.L-1 acid. The results thus obtained defined separation efficiency (E) distribution coefficient (KD). Separation was observed at maximum efficiencies 69.33%, 47.8%, 12.93%, 17.9%, 15.625% & 14.18% iso-butanol, iso-octanol respectively. Since this study natural chemical, helpful make process more eco-friendly further increased help reactive extractants.
